Wednesday March 29 - Cochin, India

Kerala - roughly translates to the land of the coconut.  Today is the first day in India. India's level of bureaucracy is second to none, Customs and immigration were complicated at best.

We are on the Local life of Kerala's Backwater tour. It was about a 2 hour bus ride to get to the boats on the canals.  The tour was a boat ride along the canals used for flooding and draining the rice fields along with a stop at a resort for lunch.
These are rental houseboats used by locals for vacation
The holy tree
Lots of birds and a good lunch on a warm and humid day.
This woman was separating clams from the shell.

March 26 - Sunday Sri Lanka

Colombo has been an interesting place.  The 3 wheeled motorcycles are everywhere.
Today's tour was the Tuk-tuk tour. We did several laps around the downtown area using different streets and a walk through Victoria park.

There was also a stop at independence square.   It was hard to get any decent pictures as there were a lot of people.
There was a guy on the sidewalk charging for pictures with his monkey.  Also there was a Cobra in a basket.  I thought that was only in the movies.  But the guy was playing a flute and the snake came up out of the basket with full hood open.  We didn't stick around for the pictures.... Crazy

Saturday March 25th - Colombo, Sri Lanka

It was another beautiful arrival into the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. We hired a driver for the day through tours by locals.  We met Suneth at the entrance to the port which was a bit of a walk from the ship.  Our first stop was at a post office to mail some postcards.
We had arranged a day trip to go to the pinwalla elephant orphanage.   The facility is no longer used as an orphanage but is more of a government run captive breeding facility.
On arrival we went down to the river to see the elephants bathing.
We got a table at a riverside restaurant and enjoyed a curry buffet watching the elephants
The elephants were marched up the center of the street back to the facility where they live
We then did some shopping and saw a demonstration of making paper from 🐘 💩

We toured the elephant facilities
We also made a quick stop for a king coconut. Where the woman tending the stand chopped off the top of the 🥥 and put a triangular whole in it with the tip of a machete. She handled it to us with a straw. Yum!
Next was a stop at a roadside stand to see wood carved masks that drive away the evil spirits in the native culture.
Next was the spice gardens.  Here a local guy explained all of the plants they grow and how they are turned into oils and creams for aravedic medicine.  It was fascinating
Our last stop on the 2.5 hour ride back to the ship was at a department store where the locals shop.  The guard bowed as we entered.  It was clear tourists do not come here as we were the only white people in the store of hundreds.  We caused a bit of a stir as woman giggled and children stared.
Even so the people in the store could not have been nicer and everywhere we have been in Sri Lanka people go out of their way to say hi and talk to us.

Friday March 24. sea day

We are approaching Sri Lanka today. The sea has been flat the last 2 days. The wake of the ship is is the biggest ripple out here.
Emailed tour guide trying to get a tour booked.  Waiting not so patiently.
Dolphins and Beaked whales during wildlife watch. Then a blue whale just before sunset

Thursday March 23 sea day

Viking has cancelled the elephant excursion after some guests complained about things they read on the internet.  So we are left scrambling for a tour on the first day we will be in port.  Lots of drama on the ship and very little internet to find and book a tour.
But it was a nice sunset, better luck tomorrow.

Wednesday March 22- Bay of Bengal

Quiet day at sea

We saw several pods of dolphins this morning
grilled shrimp on the pool deck for lunch and dinner at the restaurant with the Mark and Shirley show.

Monday March 20 - Georgetown

Georgetown We are off to the orangutan reserve today.

Long walk out to the buses and then an hour and half bus ride to Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation
Interesting place that houses the Boneno subspecies of 3  orang subspecies
The best part of the trip was after the walk through the cage tunnel walkway from the dock there is a feeding station out over the water with ropes going to it that the "forest people" swing on.  We are able to throw our apples to the 🦧.

Bus ride back out though palm oil plantations and factories.  Wea very long bridge with a stop afterwards to get a picture of it. The haze and air pollution didn't help. Even the rain last night didn't clear it up.
As we approached the terminal mark, Shirley and I got off early and Martha continued to the ship.  We had a little local food
Then out onto Chew Jetty
A little walk around little India
Back to the ship and dinner at Manfredis
